James Graham, first Marquess of Montrose, was the kind of figure historians love to argue about and novelists dream of: a man who switched sides, burned bright, and paid the price. Mowbray Morris's 1892 biography traces the arc of this improbable Scottish hero, from his aristocratic upbringing and early political awakenings through his transformation from Covenanter to Royalist commander. The narrative follows Montrose's dazzling 1644-1645 campaign, when with a handful of men he routed the Covenanters in a series of battles that seemed to defy military logic.
