This is a biography of a man who burned himself into Scottish memory. John Graham, Viscount of Dundee, known as Claverhouse, was either a loyal servant of the crown or a merciless persecutor of the faithful, depending entirely on who was doing the remembering. Written in 1721, this is one of the earliest biographical attempts to grapple with a legacy that still divides. Morris traces Claverhouse from his ambiguous birth into an ancient noble family through his education at St Andrews and into the violent religious wars that made him infamous. The book captures the central paradox: to Jacobites he was a martyred hero who died at the Battle of Killiecrankie fighting for the Stuarts; to Covenanters he was the Butcher of the Killing Times, a name that still carries horror in Scotland. Morris draws on testimonies from those who knew him, attempting to find the man beneath the myth. The result is a fascinating period piece that reveals how quickly history becomes propaganda, and how a nation's wounds refuse to close.
