In 1797, Mary Wollstonecraft died giving birth to her daughter Fanny. Her husband William Godwin, the radical philosopher who had championed rational truth above all else, faced an impossible question: how to honor her memory without lying. The result was this memoir, a document so frank about Wollstonecraft's suicide attempts, her desperate affair with the American Gilbert Imlay, and her out-of-wedlock child that it scandalized Georgian England and cast her reputation into darkness for over a century.
