Machine-Room Chants

Machine-Room Chants

Tom Maguire

These are the chants of men who fed the engines of empire while their own bodies wore down. Tom Maguire, Yorkshire trade unionist of Irish descent, wrote poetry that pulses with the rhythm of industrial labor, the anger of the exploited, and the stubborn dignity of those who build everything and own nothing. Published posthumously in 1895, this collection captures the raw, brutal world of the machine room: the long hours, the broken bodies, the women and children succumbing tooverwork, and the quiet suicides that punctuateroutine despair. Yet Maguire's verse never softens its subjects or sentimentalizes their suffering. His language is the language of the factory floor itself, direct and unflinching. Keir Hardie's prefatory remarks position these poems as documents from the front lines of a nascent labor movement, but they function too as something more lasting: a record of how the working class spoke about its own condition, in its own voice, before the politicians learned to speak for it.
