Letters from the Holy Land

She was famous for painting wars, but here she captures something quieter: the silence of places where history stacked itself into stone. These letters, written during a journey from Venice through Egypt to the Holy Land, blend an artist's eye with a pilgrim's reverence. Butler records her arrival in Jaffa, her passage through landscapes that billions recognize from scripture, her encounters with a region caught between Ottoman rule and the stirrings of modernity. Her sixteen color illustrations accompany the text, translating the same scenes she describes in prose. This is travel writing before tourism, when the Holy Land still felt like an expedition, when a celebrated Irish painter could stand before sites she'd only known from the Bible and write home about what it meant to finally arrive.
