Letters from Egypt

In 1862, a tubercular English lady arrived in Egypt seeking healing and found instead a country that would claim her heart and eventually her grave. Lady Duff Gordon's letters from Egypt constitute something rarer than a travelogue: an intimate portrait of everyday Egyptians written from within their world, not as an observer from a hotel balcony but as a woman who made a servant named Omar her confidant, who learned Arabic, who wept at the kindness of strangers in a land of stark inequalities. These are not letters about pashas and politicians. They are letters about the fellahin working the fields, the Coptic Christians and Muslim sheikhs, the craftsmen and slaves who comprised the actual living texture of Egypt under Ismail Pasha. Duff Gordon wrote with a curiosity that was then radical: she wanted to know how people actually lived, not just what they performed for foreign eyes. The result is a document of remarkable humanity, a 19th-century Englishwoman's love affair with a nation that was beginning to transform under the pressure of modernization, seen through the eyes of someone who saw its people before they were consigned to the footnotes of imperial history.
