Lamplighter

Published in 1854, 'Lamplighter' by Maria Susanna Cummins follows the life of Gertrude, an abused child raised by the cruel Nan Grant. The only source of kindness in her life is the lamplighter, Truman Flint, who takes her in after she is abandoned. As Gertrude grows up, she learns from various mentors and becomes admired by many, but her true happiness hinges on her love for Willie Sullivan, especially after years of separation. The novel explores themes of love, resilience, and the quest for personal happiness.
