Jinrikisha Days in Japan

In 1885, an American woman arrived in a Japan that existed between two worlds: the ancient civilization of emperors and tea ceremonies, and the rapidly modernizing nation embracing railways, telegraph wires, and Western fashion. Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore spent years as both visitor and resident, documenting a country in breathtaking transformation. Her prose captures the shock of arrival, the winding coastal routes where Mt. Fuji appears like a painted screen, the shock of recognizing that Japan is not the static oriental fantasy of Western imagination but a living, breathing society negotiating its own future. The jinrikisha of the title is her vessel through this landscape, pulled by men whose industry and politeness she records with a traveler's wonder and a journalist's precision. Scidmore is no uncritical admirer; she notes what frustrates her, what confuses her, what delights her. The result is a remarkably human document: neither hagiography nor condescension, but a careful observer's attempt to understand a culture at a pivotal moment. For readers who crave the texture of history as it was lived, who want to feel the rumble of wooden wheels on cobblestones and smell the incense in temples that had not yet become tourist attractions, this is an irreplaceable time capsule.
