John Cleland

John Leland's 'Itinerary of John Leland in or About the Years 1535-1543' is a compilation of his travels across England and Wales from 1538 to 1543. The manuscript, which consists of Leland's notebooks, was first published in the 18th century and later in a ten-part, five-volume edition by Lucy Toulmin between 1906 and 1910. This work serves as an early form of a gazetteer, documenting the geography and history of England during a time when much of it was still unknown to its inhabitants. Despite its occasional inconsistencies and lapses into Latin, it remains a valuable resource for those interested in English history.
