Hypnerotomachia: The Strife of Loue in a Dreame

One of the strangest books ever published, the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is a fever dream of the Italian Renaissance: a pagan's pilgrimage through a world of classical ruins, erotic sculpture, and overwhelming beauty. The protagonist Poliphilo wanders through a bewildering dreamscape in search of his beloved Polia, encountering towering architecture, shadowy groves, and radiant visions that blur the line between desire and delirium. Originally composed in hyper-elaborate Italian prose in 1499 and attributed to Francesco Colonna, a Dominican friar of scandalous reputation, the text pulses with obsessive attention to buildings, gardens, costumes, and the bodies of nymphs. Its 174 woodcuts became a reference book for European architects and designers for generations, shaping how the Renaissance imagined antiquity. Yet this is no dry scholarly work. It is licentious, erudite, and utterly unworldly, a book that treats a dream of love as a grand tour of everything worth seeing. Joscelyn Godwin's translation finally brings its wayward charm and arcane learning to English readers, preserving the strangeness that made every Renaissance intellectual whisper about it.
