House of Baltazar
Published in 1916, 'House of Baltazar' by William John Locke follows John Balthazar, a former Cambridge mathematician who vanished for 20 years after falling in love with another woman. Living incognito in China with his pupil Quong Ho, he remains unaware of the First World War until a zeppelin crash forces him back to reality. Upon returning, he discovers his wife has died and he has a son he never knew about, who has crossed paths with his former love.
