Historic Girls: Stories of Girls Who Have Influenced the History of Their Times

Before women could vote, before they could own property in their own names, there were girls who ruled empires, led armies, and bent history to their will. This 1887 collection, drawn from Saint Nicholas magazine, tells their stories. From Zenobia, the queen of Palmyra who dared to defy the might of Rome, to Helena of Britain, whose faith shaped an empire, these are not the passive figures of conventional history. These are girls who saw the world as it was and refused to accept its limits. Whether negotiating peace treaties, rallying armies, or claiming thrones, they acted with the full weight of their circumstances pressing against them, and still they rose. Brooks wrote for the youth of his day, but his intent was broader: to show that courage has no age limit, and neither does influence. The book endures because its central truth remains valid. Girls have always shaped history. Often we simply fail to look.
