Historic Boys: Their Endeavours, Their Achievements, and Their Times

Twelve boys who shaped empires, led armies, and rewrote the rules of power before they were men. This collection from 1900 gathers the remarkable true stories of young historical figures, from Marcus of Rome (the future Emperor Marcus Aurelius, appointed prefect of Rome at sixteen) to William of Normandy, from Ixtl' of Tezcuco to Charles of Sweden. These are not fairy tales of fantasy. They are the actual adventures of real boys who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances and rose to meet them. Elbridge S. Brooks wrote these tales for the young readers of Saint Nicholas magazine, believing that history's most gripping narratives often belonged to history's youngest actors. The result is a book that treats its subjects not as statues to be reverenced, but as boys to be understood: reckless, brave, clever, and deeply human. Whether encountering a young Venetian merchant bargaining with Moorish traders or a medieval prince learning the weight of a crown, readers discover that the line between childhood and history was often far thinner than we remember. For any young reader who has ever wondered whether they are too young to matter, these twelve stories offer a roaring, defiant answer.
