Herzegovina; Or, Omer Pacha and the Christian Rebels

A British traveler's firsthand account of the Herzegovinian rebellion of the 1850s, witnessed from inside the Ottoman military campaign. George Arbuthnot departs Trieste as Turkish forces mobilize to suppress Christian insurgents, journeying through Dalmatian ports Zara and Sebenico before entering the rebellious territories alongside Omer Pacha's troops. His narrative captures the landscape, the local populations, and the tensions simmering at the edge of empire. Arbuthnot documents the contradictory sentiments of coastal towns toward Turkish rule, the social and political dynamics of a region caught between Ottoman authority and Christian resistance, and the machinery of military suppression in motion. Written with Victorian precision and observational curiosity, the text serves as both historical document and period portrait of a volatile corner of the Balkans on the eve of further upheaval.
