Heads of Cerberus

Francis Stevens

Heads of Cerberus is among the earliest alternate-world novels ever written, a 1919 pulp masterpiece that predates the genre's modern giants by decades. When three ordinary people inhale a mysterious vial of grey dust, they wake in Philadelphia, 2118. The city they knew is gone, replaced by a totalitarian nightmare where citizens have no names, only numbers and superlatives. The Loveliest holds beauty as currency. The Cleverest holds power as god. The masses wear their ranks on buttons pinned to their chests, begging for elevation. To earn passage home, the trio must compete in a deadly game where losing means imprisonment or death, and trusting the wrong person means losing everything. Francis Stevens builds a world of uncanny prophecy: surveillance, propaganda, class warfare, and the erasure of individual identity, all rendered in vivid, breathless prose. This is adventure fiction with teeth, a sharp satire wrapped in pulp adventure, and a landmark work that proves the best speculative fiction has always been about Now, not some distant Then.
