Gatherings from Spain

Richard Ford's 1846 masterpiece began as a guidebook but detonated into something far more delicious: a portrait of Spain in all its fragmented, contradictory glory. Writing for travelers who hadn't yet crossed the Pyrenees, Ford dissects a nation that was less a country than a loose confederation of proud, ancient kingdoms, each guarded by mountains and preserved by rivers that kept localism alive. He captures a Spain where every province still remembers its independence, where the train from Madrid feels like an invasion of foreign territory. Ford's pen is sharp, amused, and endlessly observant: he sketches bullfights, debates the merits of Andalusian versus Castilian character, and somehow makes border crossings feel like philosophical experiments. The illustrations, many by Ford's own hand, add period charm to a book that reads less like tourism advice and more like spending an evening with the wittiest person at a dinner party who happens to know everything about Spain. For readers who want to understand how geography carved a nation into a hundred pieces, and why that fragmentation is the point.
