From a Girl's Point of View

Lilian Bell wrote this in 1897, but she could be blogging today. These are sharp, funny essays about the eternal puzzle of men and women, delivered with the kind of wry observation that makes you want to lean in and agree out loud. Bell's particular target is what she calls "the untrained man under thirty-five" - that peculiar species of young man who is self-absorbed, socially clumsy, and somehow unaware that these are problems. She watches the mating dance with a novelist's eye and a satirist's pen, dismantling the romantic pieties of her era while somehow making it all feel like gossip with your smartest friend. But beneath the wit lies something sharper: a woman tired of pretending she doesn't notice what everyone notices. Bell has no patience for false modesty or the polite fictions surrounding courtship. She articulates what women actually think about men, love, and the absurd dance of romance - and does it with such sparkle that you forget you're reading a century-old text. This is vintage feminist sass, but with real teeth underneath.
