Fil and Filippa: Story of Child Life in the Philippines

Step into the tropical world of two Filipino children in this charming 1917 portrait of childhood in the Philippines. Through the curious eyes of a visitor, we meet Fil and Filippa as they navigate their days among friends and family, attending church, celebrating local festivals, and discovering the lush landscapes around them. John Stuart Thomson captures the rhythm of daily life in a place where cocoa and sugar sway in the fields, where distinctive Philippine architecture shelters loved ones, and where community ties run deep. The narrative pulses with natural wonder: vibrant flora and fauna, the warmth of Filipino hospitality, and the simple joys of youthful friendship. Originally written for American children in grades five through seven, this book served as a window onto a distant culture, introducing readers to customs and traditions far from their own. The Petershams' illustrations bring the islands to life with characteristic warmth. While the colonial perspective of its era is part of its historical context, the book endures as a sweet snapshot of Filipino life at the turn of the twentieth century, full of tenderness and cultural pride.
