China Revolutionized

Published in 1913 while the smoke still settled over the Middle Kingdom, this is a front-row account of one of history's most consequential collapses. John Stuart Thomson witnessed firsthand the October 1911 revolution that shattered two thousand years of imperial rule and birthed China's first republic. With immediacy no later historian can replicate, Thomson traces the unraveling of the Qing Dynasty through the eyes of those who lived it: reformers agitating for change, local leaders seizing opportunity, foreign powers maneuvering for advantage, and a populace exhausted by corruption and economic despair. The book argues, with striking specificity, that the 1909 Shanghai Opium Conference helped clear the fog from a nation's mind and funded the rebellion that followed. Thomson introduces us to Sun Yat-sen's vision, Yuan Shikai's ruthless pragmatism, and the thousand smaller calculations that toppled an empire. This is not detached history but journalism written in adrenaline, capturing a nation in radical transformation before the next betrayal of republican ideals had even begun.
