Evolution Creatrice
Creative Evolution (L'Évolution créatrice), published in 1907 by French philosopher Henri Bergson, presents an alternative to Darwinian evolution. Bergson introduces the concept of élan vital, or 'vital impetus,' proposing that evolution is driven by a natural creative impulse. The book also explores the idea of 'duration,' a subjective experience of time that influenced modernist thought. Its English translation was released in 1911, and it was notably popular in the early 20th century before the rise of the Neodarwinian synthesis.
