
Esther Waters
Published in 1894, 'Esther Waters' by George Moore follows the life of a young, pious woman from a poor working-class background. After being seduced by a fellow employee and becoming pregnant, Esther is abandoned by her lover and chooses to raise her child alone. The novel is notable for its realistic portrayal of a 'fallen woman' in Victorian society and is regarded as Moore's best work.
