This is one of the earliest American accounts of Southeast Asia, a firsthand chronicle of a young republic reaching across the Pacific in search of trade. Edmund Roberts, a Salem merchant turned special envoy, sailed aboard the USS Peacock in 1832 to negotiate commercial treaties with the courts of Cochin-China (modern Vietnam), Siam (Thailand), and Muscat (Oman). The mission was urgent: American merchants faced piracy, extortion, and arbitrary impositions in Eastern markets, and the U.S. government hoped formal agreements would secure equitable terms. Roberts documents the voyage with sharp eyes and practical concerns, from navigating remote archipelagos to decoding court ceremonies and local politics. He witnessed a Southeast Asia on the cusp of transformation, just before Western imperial pressure fundamentally reshaped the region.
