Egri csillagok, written by Géza Gárdonyi in the early 20th century, is a historical novel set in Hungary during the first half of the 16th century. It spans approximately 25 years, focusing on significant events such as the bloodless occupation of Buda in 1541 and the 1552 Siege of Eger by the Turks. The novel explores themes of mercy, love, friendship, and trust, while also addressing the impact of the Reformation and the tensions between Hungarians and the Holy Roman Emperor. It is regarded as the most famous Hungarian novel and has been translated into English as Eclipse of the Crescent Moon.
