Eastern Shame Girl

A novel that was prosecuted and defended in court, winning judicial praise for its exceptional literary merit. Set in ancient Peking, this tragic romance follows Li Chia, a young scholar of promise traveling for examinations, who becomes captivated by Shih-niang, a celebrated singing girl whose beauty and sincerity are matched only by the tragedy of her circumstances. Their love flourishes despite the walls of convention that separate them - she bound by her profession and patrons, he by familial expectations and the crushing economics of freedom. As Li Chia scrambles to raise the enormous sum required to purchase Shih-niang's liberty, their deep emotional bond is tested by societal pressures, personal insecurities, and time running dangerously short. Drawing from seventeenth-century Chinese literary traditions, this is a tale of love's transcendent power and its terrible cost. The book's own legal battle - attacked in court, then acquitted with recognition of its artistic significance - only amplifies its resonance as a story about the collision between desire and the rules that govern society.
