A biting satire about three German journeymen who embody virtue so absolutely it becomes absurdity. Fleich, Zündel, and Hemann arrive in Seldwyla seeking employment with the local comb-maker, each possessing the same suffocating qualities: industry, frugality, moderation, and an almost pathological aversion to conflict. When they discover a wealthy young woman whose dowry could finance their own shop, the three righteous men transform into vicious competitors, their buried selfishness erupting in a frantic race that devolves into physical combat. The results are disastrous for two, but the winner discovers that victory has a crueler twist than he imagined. Keller's masterpiece of the realistic grotesque exposes how petty bourgeois virtues, stripped of humanity, become indistinguishable from vice.
