Death Be Not Proud

John Donne

Death Be Not Proud

Death Be Not Proud

John Donne

Poetry

One of the most audacious poems ever written in English. John Donne, the 17th-century master of the metaphysical conceit, attacks death not with fear but with logic - a devastating argument that reduces death to nothing more than a brief sleep before eternal waking. The poem's central claim is revolutionary: death has no power because it doesn't truly kill. Those who die simply pass into everlasting life, and even death itself must one day die. This is a sonnet of breathtaking intellectual courage. Donne personifies death and then systematically dismantles its pride, pointing out that the "poor instruments" of death - plague, war, sickness - are merely executioners, not death itself. The final couplet delivers the knockout blow: one death will bring an end to all death, rendering death impotent forever. Written in 1609, it remains perhaps the greatest poetic defiance of mortality in the English language. For anyone who has ever lain awake fearing death, Donne offers this fierce counterargument: death is not mighty, death is not dreadful, and death will ultimately be its own undoing.
