Contigo Pan Y Cebolla

This 1833 comedy is a razor-sharp burlesque of Romantic idealism, written by Mexican playwright Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza during his years in Madrid. The title itself is a wry joke: "With You, Bread and Onion" is the Spanish idiom for loving someone through poverty, and Gorostiza uses it ironically to puncture the grand passions of his contemporaries. The play centers on Doña Matilde, who finds herself torn between genuine affection for the impoverished Don Eduardo and her father's insistence that she consider more financially secure suitors. What unfolds is a comedy of manners where characters speak the unspeakable: that love in early 19th-century Spain was inseparable from economics, that marriage was as much a business arrangement as a union of hearts. Through witty dialogue and escalating misunderstandings, Gorostiza exposes the romantic fantasies of his era as precisely that, fantasies while arguing, with sharp humor, that emotional survival and financial stability could not be so easily separated. The play endures because it asks a question every generation must answer: is love enough when there is no bread?
