Citadel of Fear, written by Gertrude Barrows Bennett under the pseudonym Francis Stevens, was first published as a serial in Argosy Magazine from 1918 to 1919 and later republished as a novel in 1970. This work is notable for being a pioneering example of dark fantasy, with Lovecraft praising it as Stevens' masterpiece. The story follows two adventurers who uncover a lost city in the Mexican jungle, where one is possessed by an evil god while the other falls in love with a woman from the ancient city of Tlapallan.
