Brief History of English and American Literature

Henry Augustin Beers surveys the sweep of English and American literature in this Victorian landmark, originally published in 1894. What distinguishes this work from later literary histories is its dual focus: Beers traces the major authors, movements, and works from both sides of the Atlantic, showing how American letters emerged from and responded to English traditions. The book opens with an introduction by John Fletcher Hurst that frames literary study as essential for understanding human thought and cultural aspiration, particularly for ministers and students of religious history. Beers organizes writers by their periods, styles, and influences, demonstrating how literature both reflects and shapes changing society. The supplementary chapters on British and American religious and theological literature add another layer, exploring the powerful, often overlooked current of faith in the Anglo-American literary tradition. For readers interested in how the Victorians understood their literary heritage, or anyone curious about the origins of modern literary criticism, this book offers a window into a formative moment in how we came to categorize and value literature.
