Brazilian Sketches

In the early 1900s, an American missionary journeys through Brazil, documenting a nation caught between ancient traditions and modern aspirations. T.B. Ray, an educational secretary for the Southern Baptist Convention, records his encounters with Rio de Janeiro's bustling streets, remote villages, and the complex religious landscape of a predominantly Catholic country. His observations reveal a Brazil rarely seen by outsiders: a place where Protestant missionaries struggle against centuries of Catholic tradition, where education promises social advancement, and where the line between faith and superstition remains tantalizingly unclear. Through personal anecdotes and vivid descriptions, Ray captures a moment in history when new ideas clash with old certainties, and when the spiritual needs of millions hang in the balance. For readers interested in early 20th-century travel writing, religious history, or the cultural dynamics of South America, Brazilian Sketches offers a fascinating window into a transformative era.
