Boulogne-Sur-Mer: St. Patrick's Native Town

What if St. Patrick wasn't Irish at all? Wasn't even British? William Fleming makes the controversial case that Christianity's most famous missionary actually came from a small Roman port in northern France. Boulogne-sur-Mer, once called Bononia, sits on the English Channel where trade routes to Britain crisscrossed the ancient world. Fleming constructs his argument from fragmentary texts, church traditions, and the complicated genealogy of late Roman Britain. The question of St. Patrick's birthplace isn't mere trivia. It shaped how medieval Christians understood their faith's arrival in Ireland, and national identities have been built on that narrative. Fleming takes readers through competing theories, ancient sources, and the political weight of claiming the saint as native. Written in 1907, this slim volume remains a fascinating artifact of historical detection, showing how scholars piece together fragmentary evidence to reconstruct the lives of saints who exist somewhere between legend and history.
