Book-Plates

In the 1890s, a passionate collector named William John Hardy sat down to defend the most improbable of hobbies: gathering the small paper labels pasted inside books. Book-plates, or ex libris, might seem like humble scraps of paper, but Hardy saw something else entirely: miniature works of art, windows into the lives and tastes of generations past, and the quiet proof that someone, somewhere, cared enough about a book to mark it as their own. This treatise chronicles the sudden explosion of book-plate collecting in late Victorian England, tracing the evolution of these owner's marks from medieval manuscripts to the elaborate engravings of Hardy’s own era. Hardy addresses the peculiar moral panic surrounding this hobby with earnest indignation, arguing convincingly that collecting book-plates is not merely respectable but genuinely virtuous. He catalogs the different styles, offers advice on proper mounting and arrangement, and reflects on what these tiny paper treasures reveal about their owners. Part scholarly history, part impassioned defense of a quiet obsession, this book is for anyone who has ever paused to admire the bookplate inside an old volume and wondered about the person who placed it there.
