Barnen Ifrån Frostmofjället

The winter of 1860 in Northern Sweden is a season of desperate choices. When their mother dies and their father has long since vanished into drink, thirteen-year-old Ante faces an impossible decision: stay and watch his six younger siblings scattered to strangers in the poorhouse, or lead them into the frozen unknown. He chooses the latter. What follows is a harrowing trek across the stark northern landscape, a journey through ice and snow and silence, where the children find themselves negotiating with their own hunger, the cruelty of strangers, and the terrible beauty of a world that does not care whether they live or die. Yet for all its hardship, this is also a story about the fierce, unbreakable bonds between siblings who choose each other over survival. Laura Fitinghoff wrote this novel in 1907, but the children's fear of being torn apart remains achingly contemporary. For readers who loved *Pippi Longstocking* but ached for something darker, for those who seek stories where the smallest voices carry the largest courage, this is that rare book: a children's classic that never patronizes its young heroes.
