Aspects of Literature

Published in the anxious aftermath of the Great War, when literary culture was grappling with what, if anything, could still be said with certainty, Aspects of Literature represents one of English criticism's most honest attempts to rebuild from rubble. John Middleton Murry was not interested in reviews that merely praised or dismissed. He wanted criticism to function as a form of knowledge, a discipline with standards worth defending. The essays collected here trace his effort to articulate what makes literature valuable and how genuine aesthetic judgment differs from mere taste. He turns this rigorous attention toward poets who mattered deeply to him: the luminous John Keats, whose letters he would later edit to profound effect, and Edward Thomas, the nature poet whose death in 1917 left a wound in English letters. Throughout, Murry asks what obligation authors bear to society, what constitutes authentic beauty, and how criticism can illuminate rather than merely describe. The result is a book that feels remarkably alive, caught between the Victorian certainties Murry inherited and the modern uncertainties he couldn't escape. For anyone interested in how English literary criticism found its twentieth-century voice, or in reading essays that take literature seriously as a matter of intellectual urgency, this remains essential.
