Aristocracy in America. from the Sketch-Book of a German Nobleman. Vol. 2 (of 2)

A German nobleman arrives in Boston in the 1830s and finds something unexpected: Americans have invented their own aristocracy. It's not built on blood or ancient title, but on wealth, commerce, and self-made prominence. And it's just as snobbish, just as rigid, just as absurd as anything you'd find in Europe. Francis J. Grund was the real thing - actual nobility who emigrated to America and watched with a knowing eye as the new republic stumbled into the same class anxieties he'd left behind. His observations are sharp, often funny, occasionally incisive. He notes the peculiar American contradiction: a society founded on equality that can't stop ranking itself. The merchants who imitate European manners, the social climbers who buy their way up, the workers who resent it all. Grund sees through the mythology of American meritocracy while remaining affectionate toward the experiment itself. This is a primary source from 1839, a window into a young nation's complicated relationship with class. It reads like smartest guest at dinner - worldly, wry, slightly horrified by what democracy produces when left to its own devices.
