Aristocracy in America. from the Sketch-Book of a German Nobleman. Vol. 1 (of 2)

''Aristocracy in America: From the Sketch-Book of a German Nobleman, Vol. 1'' by Francis J. Grund, first published in 1839, offers a critical examination of American society through the perspective of a European aristocrat. The book discusses class distinctions and societal behaviors in cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., highlighting the tensions between aspirations for aristocracy and the democratic ideals of equality. Through personal anecdotes and observations, Grund reveals the ironic attitudes of the upper class towards democracy and their longing for aristocratic status.
