Among the Tibetans

In 1889, at sixty-eight years old, Isabella Bird embarked on a journey into the Himalayas that would become one of the most vivid travel narratives of the Victorian age. Recently widowed and in poor health, Bird had been prescribed an "open-air life" as cure for her chronic ailments. Rather than retreat into quiet widowhood, she rode on horseback into some of the most remote territories of the British Empire, accompanied by an Afghan guard and a mischievous horse named Gyalpo. The narrative follows Bird from the gardens of Srinagar through Kashmir's breathtaking valleys and into the remote highlands of Lesser Tibet, where she camps among villagers, visits medical missions, and documents a way of life that was already disappearing. Bird writes with sharp observation and occasional dry humor about the peoples she meets, the landscapes that awe and exhaust her, and the practical challenges of traveling through some of Earth's most rugged terrain. What emerges is both a remarkable historical document and a portrait of a woman who refused to let age or convention constrain her.
