A "y" Girl in France: Letters of Katherine Shortall

In the winter of 1919, a young woman named Katherine Shortall boarded a ship bound for France, carrying not a uniform but a typewriter and an inexhaustible curiosity about what lay beyond the war's headlines. These are her letters home, and they crackle with the unexpected vitality of someone finding meaning in the ruins. Through Katherine's eyes, we see post-war France not as a tableau of devastation but as a living, strange, sometimes funny place where soldiers still carry Christmas packages, where the Y.M.C.A. girls form fast friendships over weak tea, and where the act of simply showing up becomes a small revolution. Her prose is unpretentious and sharp, capable of pivoting from humor to heartbreak in a single paragraph. These are not the polished memoirs of a famous general or war correspondent; they are the genuine, unfiltered voices of someone who was there, writing to people she loved, telling them the truth no historian could capture.
