A Woman's Journey Through the Philippines: On a Cable Ship That Linked Together the Strange Lands Seen En Route

In 1900s Philippines, a woman boards the cable ship Burnside and enters a world few travelers ever saw. Florence Kimball Russel was not a passenger in the usual sense. She lived among engineers and sailors, watching men wrestle with thousands of miles of underwater cable while the ship lurched between islands that most Westerners had never heard of. Her Christmas morning arrival in Dumaguete brings her face to face with crowds of curious onlookers and the thrill of a traditional cockfight, those bloody spectacles that both fascinated and repelled foreign visitors. The ship becomes a moving observatory where tropical sunsets bleed into technical diagrams and the constant thrum of the engines becomes white noise against the extraordinary strangeness of where they are. Russel writes with the eye of someone who understands she is witnessing something fleeting: a Philippines being linked, wire by wire, to a wider world that will transform everything she sees. For readers seeking genuine adventure, unvarnished early colonial encounters, and the rare voice of a woman navigating spaces built for men, this obscure narrative delivers the goods.
