A Walk from London to Fulham
1860
In 1860, Thomas Crofton Croker walked the same route from London to Fulham almost daily, and rather than let the journey become invisible to him, he chose to really see it. What emerges is a quietly obsessive act of preservation: a walking account that documents the landmarks, the ghosts of historical figures, and the layered stories embedded in a landscape already disappearing under Victorian development. Croker moves through Knightsbridge and Brompton, pausing at churches, old inns, and the houses of the famous dead, weaving personal reflection with antiquarian research. He is tender about the ordinary and outraged at what progress threatens to erase. This is not adventure writing but something more melancholic and modern: the recognition that the familiar becomes foreign the moment you learn its history, and that watching a city change is a kind of grief. For readers who love London, walking essays, or the Victorian impulse to capture what vanishes.
