A Southern Woman's Story

Phoebe Yates Pember

War & Military, Health & Medicine, History, Biography & Autobiography

Phoebe Yates Pember arrived at Richmond's Chimborazo Hospital in 1862 expecting to help. What she found was chaos: inadequate supplies, insufficient staff, and thousands of dying Confederate soldiers. As the unofficial matron of the Confederacy's largest hospital, she managed an empire of suffering that would eventually see 15,000 patients pass through her doors. This memoir, published just months after Lee's surrender, pulls no punches. Pember writes with sharp wit and exhausted clarity about the absurdity of war, the indomitable spirit of her nurses, and the particular loneliness of being a Southern Jewish woman during the Confederacy's final days. She navigated anti-Semitic slights from her own patients while defending her decision to remain in Richmond against family who had fled north. The prose has the quality of someone who has seen too much to prettify anything. Yet there's dark humor here, and warmth, and a stubborn refusal to be erased from history. For readers interested in Civil War history, women's studies, or Jewish American experiences, this is an essential primary source that challenges simple narratives.
