A History of Postal Agitation from Fifty Years Ago Till the Present Day

The British Post Office, that most respectable of Victorian institutions, harbored a secret. While other branches of civil service remained decorously quiet, the postal service seethed with discontent. H. G. Swift chronicles five decades of organized worker agitation within England's postal system, revealing a world where men who delivered the nation's letters faced compulsory Sunday labor, depressed wages for new recruits, and a patronage system that treated them as servants rather than employees. What emerges is more than institutional grievance. Swift captures the emergence of labor consciousness among workers society deemed respectable but treated as inferior: the long hours, the arbitrary discipline, the距离 between the Post Office's public image and its internal realities. The book details how postal workers began to organize, articulate their grievances, and demand recognition not as supplicants but as entitled participants in a modern economy. For readers interested in the hidden history of labor, this account illuminates how one of Britain's oldest institutions became an unexpected laboratory for workers' rights, setting patterns that would echo through the twentieth century.
