A Brief History of Wood-Engraving from Its Invention

A Brief History of Wood-Engraving from Its Invention, written by Joseph Cundall and first published in 1895, provides a comprehensive historical account of wood-engraving from its origins in the 15th and 16th centuries. The book examines the significance of wood-engraving in Europe, particularly its role in religious prints and devotional imagery. Cundall discusses early woodcuts, technical craftsmanship, and notable works, including a colored print of the Virgin with the Holy Child, while addressing the debates surrounding the medium's evolution.
