A Book of Sibyls: Miss Barbauld, Miss Edgeworth, Mrs Opie, Miss Austen

Anne Thackeray Ritchie gathers four remarkable women from the early nineteenth century and names them Sibyls-prophetic voices speaking across the ages. In this affectionate biographical collection, she reviving the lives of Anna Lætitia Barbauld, Maria Edgeworth, Amelia Opie, and Jane Austen, four writers who dared to publish in an age when women were supposed to be silent. Ritchie knew these women or their circles; her portraits carry the warmth of personal memory mixed with Victorian reverence for literary ancestors. She traces Barbauld's graceful transition from educator to poet, celebrates Edgeworth's wit and reformist spirit, remembers Opie's passionate advocacy, and offers a rare glimpse of Austen through the eyes of those who knew her. This is not scholarly biography but something more intimate: a late-Victorian writer claiming her inheritance and introducing readers to the women who made her own literary life possible. It endures as both a record of four extraordinary lives and a testament to the invisible lines of influence that connect generations of women writers.
