The Peony Pavilion is a haunting love story that begins in a dream. Du Liniang, a sheltered young woman trapped within the walls of her family compound, encounters a handsome scholar in a vivid dream and falls desperately in love. Consumed by longing for this phantom lover, she wastes away and dies, only to return as a ghost, still burning with that impossible passion. When the real Liu Mengmei arrives, drawn by fate or dream or something in between, their connection transcends the boundary between life and death. Tang Xianzu wrote this in 1598 as a radical act of emotional rebellion. In an era of rigid social constraints, he insisted that love could be more powerful than death, more binding than duty. The play sweeps across the Chinese landscape in fifty-five acts of lyrical beauty, sometimes achingly tender, sometimes wildly funny, always profoundly strange. It is both a celebration of romantic passion and a sharp critique of the social structures that cage desire.
