Virginia Sharpe Patterson was an influential American author known for her sharp wit and social commentary, often writing under the pseudonym Garry Gaines. Born in Delaware, Ohio, she was educated at home by her father, a prominent Maryland senator, before attending the Delaware Female Seminary. After her marriage, she settled in Bellefontaine, Ohio, where she began her writing career with articles for the Cincinnati Gazette. Her notable work, 'The Girl of the Period,' a series of satirical pieces originally published in the Bellefontaine Examiner, showcased her ability to critique societal norms and expectations of women in the late 19th century. Despite struggling with health issues from 1881 onward, Patterson remained active in literary and community circles. She served as vice-president of the Ohio Women's Press Club in 1889 and founded the Woman's Club of Bellefontaine in 1890, further establishing her commitment to women's issues and literary pursuits. Patterson's contributions to literature and her advocacy for women's voices in the press marked her as a significant figure in American literature, influencing future generations of writers and activists alike.
