Vilho Helanen was a Finnish civil servant and politician known for his significant influence on far-right movements in Finland during the early to mid-20th century. Born in Oulu, he pursued higher education at the University of Helsinki, earning his MA in 1923 and his doctorate in 1940. Helanen's political engagement began early when he edited the student paper Ylioppilaslehti from 1924 to 1926 and became involved with the Academic Karelia Society, eventually serving as its chairman multiple times. His leadership helped steer the Society away from democratic ideals, reflecting a growing interest in authoritarianism. Helanen's political activities extended beyond Finland, as he was inspired by the far-right sentiments he observed during a visit to Estonia in 1933. This experience led him to participate in the coup attempt of the Vaps Movement in 1935. Although he was a close associate of Elias Simojoki and a major figure in the Patriotic People's Movement, Helanen chose to form his own group, Rising Finland, in 1940. His shift towards mainstream politics was marked by his alignment with the National Progressive Party, while he remained a prominent advocate for pro-German sentiments during World War II. Helanen's legacy is complex, as he navigated the turbulent political landscape of his time, leaving a controversial mark on Finnish history.
