Sidney Hartnoll Beard was an English writer and activist known for his fervent advocacy of vegetarianism and fruitarianism. He played a pivotal role in the promotion of a moral framework for vegetarianism, arguing that it was a Christian duty to adopt a humane diet. Beard re-established the Order of the Golden Age, serving as its president and editing its journal, the Herald of the Golden Age, from 1896 to 1918. His outreach efforts included organizing lectures and public discussions, notably a 1908 address at the Cambridge Guildhall alongside fellow activist Josiah Oldfield. Beard's notable publications include 'A Simple Guide to a Natural and Humane Diet' (1898) and 'Is Flesh-Eating Morally Defensible?' (1898), which challenged societal norms regarding diet and ethics. He defined fruitarianism to encompass a wide range of plant-based foods while permitting some animal products, such as dairy and eggs, and viewed fish as a transitional food for those moving away from meat consumption. His later work, 'Our Real Relationship to God: The Lost Ideal of Christianity' (1922), further explored the intersection of diet and spirituality. Beard's legacy lies in his early advocacy for vegetarianism as a moral imperative, influencing future generations of dietary reformers and ethical vegetarians.
