Mary Ellis, originally named May Belle Elsas, was an American actress and singer whose career flourished primarily in Britain. Trained as a lyric soprano, she made her mark in the world of opera, notably creating the role of Genovieffa in the world premiere of Giacomo Puccini's "Suor Angelica" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. Ellis transitioned to Broadway, where she originated the title role in Rudolf Friml's operetta "Rose-Marie" in 1924, and showcased her versatility in Shakespearean roles, including Kate in "The Taming of the Shrew." Her move to England in 1930 marked the beginning of a significant chapter in her career, as she became a prominent figure in London's West End musicals, particularly in Ivor Novello's acclaimed productions such as "Glamorous Night" and "The Dancing Years." During World War II, Ellis contributed to welfare efforts in hospitals, demonstrating her commitment to service alongside her artistic endeavors. After the war, she returned to the stage, performing in works by notable playwrights such as Noël Coward and Terence Rattigan, as well as continuing her involvement in radio, television, and film, including a role in "The 3 Worlds of Gulliver" in 1960. Spanning over half a century, her career left an indelible mark on the performing arts, showcasing her talent and versatility across various mediums, and solidifying her legacy as a significant figure in both American and British theatre.
