John Laing

John Laing was a notable 19th-century Scottish author and naturalist, recognized for his contributions to the literature of exploration and zoology. His most significant work, 'A Voyage to Spitzbergen,' offers a detailed account of the Arctic region, including its geography, wildlife, and the whaling industry. Through meticulous observations and vivid descriptions, Laing provided readers with insights into the natural history of the North, as well as the cultural and economic aspects of the Shetland Islands and their role in maritime activities. Laing's writings are significant not only for their scientific content but also for their narrative style, which blends adventure with scholarly observation. His work contributed to the growing interest in Arctic exploration during his time, influencing both contemporary and later naturalists and explorers. Although not as widely known today, Laing's dedication to documenting the natural world and its inhabitants reflects the spirit of inquiry that characterized the era of exploration in the 19th century.

“Acepta la locura. Crea el delirio. Establece la duda. Alimenta la paranoia.””

The Analyst

“Te pasas toda la vida atorado en el laberinto, pensando en cómo vas a escapar de ahí un día y que fabuloso será; imaginar ese futuro te mantiene con vida, pero nunca te escapas. Sólo utilizas el futuro para escapar del presente.””

Looking for Alaska

“I don't like either the word [hike] or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not 'hike!' Do you know the origin of that word saunter? It's a beautiful word. Away back in the middle ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going they would reply, 'A la sainte terre', 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them.””
